SJTU Team Won First Prize in the National Smart Car Competition for College Students of Ministry of Education (East Division)

The sixth "Freescale Cup" National Smart Car Competition for College Students (East Division) was held successfully on July 20th to 21st, 2011 at the Shaw Stadium of Zhejiang University. There are 278 teams from more than 60 colleges and universities in Eastern China participating in the competition. After two days’ fierce competition, six teams from SJTU, under the guidance of Associate Professor Yang Ming and Lecturer Wang Bing from SEIEE Department of Automation, won a total of four first prizes, one second prize and one third prize, and advanced to the National Final.

This technologically creative competition covers such disciplines as control, pattern recognition, sensor technology, electronics, electrical, computer and mechanics. Freescale HCS12 microcontroller is adopted as the core control module to steer the modified model cars on the specified route; the car that finishes in the shortest time wins. The competition is composed of such three groups as camera, optic, and electromagnetic. This year about 1500 teams in the nationwide have entered the competition. Preliminaries are conducted in seven Divisions and the winning teams of each Division will advance to the National Final that is to be held on August 18 to 19 at Northwestern Polytechnical University. On that occasion, 165 shortlisted teams from the seven Divisions across the country will compete for the championship.
