“Jiaolong”, Champion of China’s Home Service Robots

       SJTU "Jiaolong" outperformed nearly 1000 teams from 162 colleges and universities nationwide and swept three gold medals and one silver medal in China Robot Competition and RoboCup China Open 2011 which was held at the Northwest Normal University from August 23-25.


       Jiaolong service robot, developed by the mobile robot lab of SEIEE Dept. of Automation, succeeds in recognizing its master in a noisy background through the machine vision, conduct language exchange with the master and accurate self-localization and autonomous navigation in the complexly-structured home to avoid obstacles and complete the missions of fetching objects and housecleaning from the master. It is the product of painstaking efforts made by the instructor Wang Jingchuan, team members Tang Hengbo, Li Liang, and Ge Tianle et al, and staff of the mobile robot lab as well.


       The competition was organized by the Lanzhou Municipal Government, the Robot Competition Committee of Chinese Association of Automation, the RoboCup China Committee, and the Center for High-Tech Research and Development, the Science and Technology Ministry of China. Covering program and competitions of soccer simulation, standard platform, humanoids, rescue simulation, rescue robots, and the alike, the competition is in some way a reflection of today's robot technology and the latest advances of its application.

       During the competition, Jiaolong team received on-site interviews from CCTVNews Channel, Gansu TV and other TV news programs.
