2012 China Robot Contest and RoboCup Open (Shanghai area) Successfully Held

From December 1st to 2nd, 2012 China Robot Contest and RoboCup Open (Shanghai area) Basketball Competition were both held in Shanghai Jiaotong University, Minhang campus. 9 teams from 9 colleges and universities across the country, including more than 50 players, took part in the competition in one big project containing three small projects. These universities include Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Shanghai University, Central South University and some other domestic famous universities.

This competition, hosted by School of Electrical Information and Electronic Engineering(SEIEE), Shanghai Jiaotong UniversitY(SJTU), was strongly supported by Jiao Tong University Youth League Committee, the SEIEE Youth League Committee, with partial financial support from United States National Instruments Corporation, Shanghai Silicon scientific instruments limited company. The first three teams will participate in "2012 International Robot Contest" this mid-December in Taiwan University who total expense would be reimbursed by United States National Instruments Corporation.

After two days of competition, Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s robot team “dragons” won two champions which were innovation project and independent-passing-ball project, Shanghai University’s “self-reliance” team won in shooting project.

During the contest, "LABVIEW and Innovation Seminar" was held. Player, mentors and robotics researchers exchanged experience in innovative robots, robotics competitions and development prospects of robotics education and so on.

Chinese Robot Competition, organized by the Chinese Association of Automation, is the largest, most powerful, highest-level technical robot competition. As the first robot soccer project competition was held in Xuhui campus of SJTU in 2002, ten years later, the first basketball robot project competition was again held in SJTU. In 2005, the competition changed its name to " China Robot Contest and RoboCup Open ",intending to promote the development of artificial intelligence, robotics and related areas. It is trying to make a standard practical aspect to promote the study of artificial intelligence and robotics, to integrate a series of new technology in practical problems and experiment.

Currently, there are more than ten projects in the contest, including football, basketball, and robot in water, and service robot. Due to various reasons, 2012 China Robot Contest cannot hold all events in one same venue, so they dispatch every event to different locations, including service robot competition held in May, Shanghai; dance competition held in August, Jiangsu Xuzhou, and the robot in water competition in November, Nanjing, Jiangsu Province.

Basketball robot competitions encouraged the exchanges and development of robot technology, stimulated students' creativity, nurtured experts in robot-related field in the future through robot's autonomous control to achieve the key techniques in basketball passing and shooting.
