Designing Communicative Media beyond Boundaries: Transforming Academic Research Process into Entrepreneurship.

Abstract:

Today, technology increasingly permeates our environment but the spread of digital displays makes us more susceptible to passive viewership. What are the impacts of digital media on the use of traditional media? How to cross the boundaries of academia research and entrepreneurship? In this talk, Dr. Pao will present her research on combining the benefits of traditional media with digital technology. Issues relating to creative process, sharing and privacy, and usability will be discussed in light of the interactive nature of new media technologies. In addition, she will share her perspectives of real-world deployment of academic research with strategic innovation in the industry.

Bio:

Sheng-Ying Aithne Pao (包盛盈) is Director of Strategic Innovation at Lee Kum Kee Group. Pao received her Ph.D. in Media Arts and Sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is certified in international trading and marketing by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council. She was named MIT Cisco Fellow for two consecutive years, and was selected as an MIT Arts Scholar. Besides that, Pao has been leading strategic innovation across industry and academia. She integrates design, marketing, and engineering approaches to drive strategic partnership between academic and industry partners in the US and worldwide fostering creativity and entrepreneurship.

Pao initiated research integrating art, design, and technology, leading to new interactive experiences featured in museums and awards including the iF Communication Design Award, selected from several thousand commercial entries across 55 countries, the ACM SIGGRAPH SRC award, and MIT 100K Entrepreneurship Competition and MIT 10K Creative Arts Entrepreneurship Competition.

In MIT, Pao co-organized MIT Living Labs and taught graduate level courses, including “Interactive Technology Design” in MIT’s Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department. Previously, Pao was a PhD candidate in the UC Berkeley-UCSF Bioengineering Department, developing portable non-invasive brain-computer interfaces. With backgrounds in design, engineering, and marketing, she has consulted on innovation strategy for startups, served on the advisory boards of a number of organizations, and been a reviewer of IDEAS Global Challenge.
