Title:   Wireless Backhaul for Mobile Small-cell

Abstract:

Small cell techniques have been recognized as the best way to deliver high capacity in cellular communications. Smaller cell has lower transmission power and shorter coverage range, and demands denser deployment. As a result, small cells are usually placed much closer to mobile users, and are installed in places very different to conventional macro-cells, such as below rooftop, on building facades, and on lamp poles in the street. Such deployment imposes significant challenges on backhaul for small cells, which must provide low-cost connectivity with high capacity and good quality-of-service (QoS) support.

In this talk, options and limitations of current wireless backhaul systems will be first reviewed. We will then introduce a novel CSIRO two-tier small-cell backhaul architecture which provides a future-proof, flexible and scalable solution by using aggregation nodes and integrating sub-6GHz point-to-multipoint (P2MP) and E-band point-to-point links. In the bottom tier of the proposed architecture, local small cells are connected to an aggregation node by P2MP and low-cost Mbps E-band links; in the top tier, aggregation nodes are inter-connected by line-of-sight (LOS) Gbps E-band links. Designs of key components used in the architecture and innovative techniques for achieving low latency and high spectral efficiency will be discussed.
