SEIEE Graduate Students Publication Requirements

(Trial Version since 2011)

Please see the most updated version in SEIEE Graduate Education Office.

In order to enhance the quailification of graduate students' education and degree conferment, strengthen the research capabilty and academic level of graduate students, encourage graduate students to reach innovative achievements, SEIEE cominbes the requirements of SJTU Graduate School  and SEIEE disciplines, and makes provisions of graduate students' publication as follows.

I. FOR PHD

Shanghai Jiao Tong University Doctorate Degree Conferment Requirements:

（which is the lowest requirements. If some discipline's requirements are lower, do follow the SJTU requirements. ）

Quantity requirement：Before Degree Dissertation Defense, students need to publish (or be accepted) at least TWO academic papers that are related to dissertation. By receiving state level of Technology Achievement Prize, student could be exempted from publication requirements. By receiving province level of Technology Achievement first prize (should be one of top five authors), or second prize (should be one of top three authors), or third prize (should be one of top two authors) , or by invention patent grant, student could be exempted from the same number of SCI/EI papers.  Province level of other technology achievement prize or other invention patent, could be considered as the same number of academic papers.

Quality requirement：At least one academic papers need to be published in journals that could be searched by SCI or EI. The articles that could be searched by EI needs to be English or other foreign language, but not Chinese.

Confirmation method：Academic papers needs to be published (or be accepted) during PHD-seeking period, with Shanghai Jiao Tong University as its first publication institution, and in the journals that be recognized by Degree Evaluation Branch Committee. When the student is the first author, the paper could be counted as ONE paper; when the student is the second author while the supervisor is the first author, the paper could be counted as HALF paper. Third author or less would be counted as none.

1． Electrical Engineering Discipline

（1）PHD seeking student needs to publish(or be accepted) at least TWO (includes two)  degree-dissertation-related articles that could be searched by SCI or EI before degree dissertation defense. Among those papers, at least one foreign language paper needs to be published (or be accepted) in SCI foreign language journals, the foreign language journals do not include University newspaper English Edition, or Lecture Notes, or WSEAS).

（2）Scientific research achievements could be counted as academic paper publication. By receiving national level of Technology Achievement Prize, student could be exempted from publication requirements. By receiving province level of Technology Achievement first prize (should be one of top five authors), or second prize (should be one of top three authors),  or third prize( should be one of top two authors) , or by invention patent grant, student could be exempted from the same number of SCI/EI papers.  Province level of other technology achievement prize or other invention patent, could be considered as the same number of academic papers.

（3）All the counted academic papers need to be published(or be accepted) during PHD-seeking period, with Shanghai Jiao Tong University as its first publication institution. When the student is the first author, the paper could be counted as ONE paper; when the student is the second author while the supervisor is the first author, the paper could be counted as HALF paper. Third author or less would be counted as none. Publications during master years could not be counted as PHD publications.

（4）Electrical Engineering Discipline welcomes and supports supervisor to make higher standard for students according to students' conditions.

2．Control Science and Engineering Discipline

（1）PHD seeking student needs to publish(or be accepted) at least TWO (includes two)  degree-dissertation-related articles that could be searched by SCI or EI before degree dissertation defense. Among those papers, at least one foreign language paper needs to be published (or be accepted) in foreign language journals, the foreign language journals do not include University newspaper English Edition, or Lecture Notes)

（2）In Order to strengthen PHD students' ability to academic communication and academic reports in English, PHD students need to join at least one International academic meeting to promote, post or discuss the paper in English; or to join state level academic meeting in English.

（3）Scientific research achievements could be counted as academic paper publication. By receiving national level of Technology Achievement Prize, student could be exempted from publication requirements. By receiving province level of Technology Achievement first prize (should be one of top five authors), or second prize (should be one of top three authors),  or third prize( should be one of top two authors) , or by invention patent grant, student could be exempted from the same number of SCI/EI papers.  Province level of other technology achievement prize or other invention patent, could be considered as the same number of academic papers.

（4）All the counted academic papers need to be published(or be accepted) in journals recognized by Degree Evaluation Branch Committee with Shanghai Jiao Tong University as its first publication institution. When the student is the first author, the paper could be counted as ONE paper; when the student is the second author while the supervisor is the first author, the paper could be counted as HALF paper. Third author or less would be counted as none. Publications during master years could not be counted as PHD publications.

（5）All the above regulations are the basic requirements, supervisors could raise up requirements according to the students' conditions.

3．Computer Science and Technology Discipline

Computer Science PHD students publication requirements are as follows:

（1）Satisfy Shanghai Jiao Tong University graduation requirements.

（2）Satisfy at least one of following

One paper in journals or conferences listed in 《计算机系推荐投稿杂志及会议》

One paper in journals listed in 《上海交通大学SCI论文A档/B档期刊分类目录》

One paper in type A or type B journals (exclude general journals) listed in  《中国计算机学会推荐国际学术刊物与会议》

One paper in type A  journals listed in 《中国计算机学会推荐国际学术刊物与会议》

Two papers in type B journals listed in 《中国计算机学会推荐国际学术刊物与会议》

Two papers in type C journals listed in 《中国计算机学会推荐国际学术刊物与会议》

One paper in type B journals and one paper in type C journals  listed in 《中国计算机学会推荐国际学术刊物与会议》

5. Information and Communication Engineering Discipline

（1）PHD seeking student needs to publish(or be accepted) at least TWO (includes two)  degree-dissertation-related articles that could be searched by SCI or EI before degree dissertation defense. Among those papers, at least one paper needs to be written in English or other foreign language and published (or be accepted) in foreign language journals.

（2）Scientific research achievements could be counted as academic paper publication. By receiving national level of Technology Achievement Prize, student could be exempted from publication requirements. By receiving province level of Technology Achievement first prize (should be one of top five authors), or second prize (should be one of top three authors), or third prize (should be one of top two authors) , or by invention patent grant, student could be exempted from the same number of SCI/EI papers.  Province level of other technology achievement prize or other invention patent, could be considered as the same number of academic papers.

（3）All the counted academic papers need to be published(or be accepted) with Shanghai Jiao Tong University as its first publication institution and with the student as its first author. When the student is the first author, the paper could be counted as ONE paper; when the student is the second author while the supervisor is the first author, the paper could be counted as HALF paper. Third author or less would be counted as none. Publications during master years could not be counted as PHD publications.

（4） Information and Communication Engineering Discipline welcomes and supports supervisor to make higher standard for students according to students' conditions.

6．Instrument Science and Technology Discipline

（1）PHD seeking student needs to publish(or be accepted) at least TWO (includes two)  degree-dissertation-related articles that could be searched by SCI or EI before degree dissertation defense. Among those papers, at least one paper needs to be written in English and published (or be accepted) in foreign language journals. The foreign language journals do not include University newspaper English Edition)

（2）Scientific research achievements could be counted as academic paper publication. By receiving national level of Technology Achievement Prize, student could be exempted from publication requirements. By receiving province level of Technology Achievement first prize (should be one of top five authors), or second prize (should be one of top three authors), or third prize (should be one of top two authors), or by invention patent grant, student could be exempted from the same number of SCI/EI papers. Beside Graduate School requirements, province level of other technology achievement prize or other invention patent, could be considered as the same number of core journal papers.

（3）All the counted academic papers need to be published(or be accepted) in journals recognized by Degree Evaluation Branch Committee with Shanghai Jiao Tong University as its first publication institution. When the student is the first author, the paper could be counted as ONE paper; when the student is the second author while the supervisor is the first author, the paper could be counted as HALF paper. Third author or less would be counted as none. Publications during master years could not be counted as PHD publications.

（4）PHD seeking students' articles needs to take supervisors as communication author.

（5）All the above regulations are the basic requirements, supervisors could raise up requirements according to the students' conditions

II. FOR MASTERS

Shanghai Jiao Tong University Master Degree Conferment Requirements:

（which is the lowest requirements. If some discipline's requirements are lower, do follow the SJTU requirements. ）

Quantity requirement：Before Degree Thesis Defense, students need to publish (or be accepted) at least ONE academic papers that are related to dissertation. By receiving province level of Technology Achievement first prize or by invention patent grant, student could be exempted from publication requirements.

Quality requirement：Academic papers need to be published (or be accepted) on public academic publications. The category of journals would be decided by Degree Evaluation Branch Committee.

Confirmation method：Academic papers needs to be published (or be accepted) in journals that are recognized by Degree Evaluation Branch Committee, with Shanghai Jiao Tong University as its first publication institution. When the student is the first author, the paper could be counted as ONE paper; when the student is the second author while the supervisor is the first author, the paper could be counted as HALF paper. Third author or less would be counted as none.

1．Electrical Engineering Discipline

（1）In principle, the core journals that publish(or accept) master students' academic papers need to be recognized by school.

（2）A conference paper that could be searched by EI would also do. But the whole paper needs to be searched in EI when applying for defense. And a searchable certificate is needed.

（3）Scientific research achievements could be counted as academic paper publication. By receiving state level of Technology Achievement Prize, student could be exempted from publication requirements. By receiving province level of Technology Achievement first prize (should be one of top eight authors), or second prize (should be one of top five authors), or third prize (should be one of top two authors), or by invention patent grant, student could be exempted from the same number of SCI/EI papers.  Province level of other technology achievement prize or other invention patent, could be considered as the same number of core journal papers.

（4）Supervisor could have higher requirements than requirement (1) but could not be lower.

2．Control Science and Engineering Discipline

（1）Before degree thesis defense, students need to publish at least ONE article in :（a）International journals that have official serial number;（b）discipline encouraged journals in China, check them in Appendix 1; (c) International Conferences that could be searched by EI; (d) discipline encouraged conferences in China, check them in Appendix 2

（2）For （c）and（d）in（1）: Conference paper needs to be accepted, students must register for conference and try best to join the conference. The confirmation of joining conference needs to be shown for degree application. If the student graduates earlier than the conference holding time, supervisor should send other author to join to avoid "No Show". When in degree application, student need to submit conference registration confirmation and other author joining confirmation signed by supervisor.

（3）Scientific research achievements could be counted as academic paper publication. By receiving state level of Technology Achievement Prize, student could be exempted from publication requirements. By receiving province level of Technology Achievement first prize (should be one of top eight authors), or second prize (should be one of top five authors), or third prize (should be one of top two authors), or by invention patent grant, student could be exempted from the same number of SCI/EI papers.  Province level of other technology achievement prize or other invention patent, could be considered as the same number of Chinese journal academic papers.

（4）Academic papers needs to be published (or accepted) in journals with Shanghai Jiao Tong University as its first publication institution. When the student is the first author, the paper could be counted as ONE paper; when the student is the second author while the supervisor is the first author, the paper could be counted as HALF paper. Third author or less would be counted as none.

（5）The paper published in journals that are not in the list in (1) needs to be submitted to Branch Degree Committee for discussion.

（6）All the above regulations are the basic requirements, supervisors could raise up requirements according to the students' conditions

3．Computer Science and Technology & Software Engineering Discipline

• The following version valid for 2016 or before enrolled students:

1. Before thesis defense, master student needs to publish at least one academic paper in one of the following: a) journals or conferences that could be searched by SCI, b) journals or conferences that could be searched by EI, 3) core journals in the discipline, 4) International Conferences

2．If master students receives province level of Technology Achievement first prize or invention patent grant, student could be exempted from publication requirements.

3. Academic paper needs to be published with student as first author and Shanghai Jiao Tong University as its first publication institution. When the student is the first author, the paper could be counted as ONE paper; when the student is the second author while the supervisor is the first author, the paper could be counted as HALF paper. Third author or less would be counted as none.

• The following version valid for 2017 or after enrolled students:

For academic master student: Before thesis defense, master student needs to publish at least ONE paper in one of the following: a) SCI journals; b)CCF recommended international conferences; c) SJTU catalogue A/B of well known international academic conferences, d) Designated Chinese journals: SCIENCE CHINA, Chinese Science Bulletin, Chinese Journal of Computers, Journal of Software. Shanghai Jiao Tong University should be listed as the first affiliation. That master candidate listed as the first author is counted as ONE paper, while listed as the second author is counted as HALF paper (the supervisor should be the first author at the meantime), and irrespective of the third author or latter.

For professional master student: Before thesis defense, master student needs to apply ONE National Invention Patent with application number and supervisor’s signature, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University should be listed as the first affiliation. OR candidate fulfills academic master student requirements.

4．Electronic Science and Technology Discipline

（1）In principle, the journals that publish(or accept) master students' academic papers needs to have official serial number. The extra edition of official journal is also valid.

（2）Supervisor’s requirement could be higher than (!) but not lower.

（3）Conference papers could only be the recognized 16 conferences in the appendix.。

（4）After supervisor reviews the journals where students publish articles and signs to agree, students could submit degree thesis defense application materials to academic coordinator.

5．Information and Communication Engineering Discipline

（3）PHD seeking students' articles needs to take supervisors as communication author.

（4）All the above regulations are the basic requirements, supervisors could raise up requirements according to the students' conditions

III. Others

This Provision came into effect from 2011 September, after getting through discussion among Shanghai Jiao Tong Univeristy Engeering Science No. 2 Department (SEIEE) Degree Evaluation Comnittee.
